9-year-old dies after dental procedure

What Happened to Silvanna Moreno? A Routine Dental Visit Ends in Tragedy

What began as a routine dental appointment turned into a heartbreaking tragedy for nine-year-old Silvanna Moreno and her family. On March 18, 2025, Silvanna visited Dreamtime Dentistry in Vista, California, for what was supposed to be a standard procedure. By the end of the day, she was gone.

Over two months later, the San Diego County Medical Examiner ruled her death accidental. The cause: methemoglobinemia in the setting of recent nitrous oxide administration—a rare but serious condition in which the blood is unable to carry enough oxygen, leading to severe hypoxia. Though uncommon, the condition can result in fatigue, shortness of breath, and in extreme cases, death.

Silvanna had been given children’s Tylenol the day before the appointment due to a low-grade fever. A new patient at the clinic, she was scheduled for a root canal on a molar. During the procedure, which lasted approximately three hours, several baby teeth and one decayed permanent tooth were also removed.

What should have been a routine dental visit became a nightmare no parent should ever face. Silvanna was a vibrant young girl with her whole life ahead of her. Now, her name may stand as a painful but powerful reminder: even the most routine procedures carry risks—and families deserve to know exactly what those risks are.
